REVIEW :To me there is no other car but a Mercedes Benz! I am now 38 years old, As a child I could name every car on the road as a 2 year old my parents tell me. One of my earliest memories is of a lady from church coming to see my mother at home. She pulled up in the most elegant white 1969 Mercedes saloon. It was to me car perfection... and still is! This was the day my love affair with the badge began. I would now like to tell you about a beautiful little girl who came into my life last year. An SLK 230 Kompressor, red, immaculate and a head turner in everyway. This is truly one of the most stunning looking 2 door convertibles of recent times. More than that it feels so very safe to be in and to drive. It is solid and heavy feeling, yet amazingly quick to take off from standing, quicker by several seconds than her big brother the 500SL. Everything you expect in a luxury car and more, like the ABS breaking system, Airbags and fuel injection, somewhat old hat now, yet it was Mercedes Benz who pioneered these features and later sold the technology to other car makers. What sets these cars apart from others is the quality, from the paint work, to the interior finish or the air conditioning which does not draw out power from the engine at all like less expensive cars. And the power window motors are strong, they do not hesitate or labour up/down. This was something I noticed straight away. As you can tell I am no motor magazine reviewer, but I know quality, good looks and a performer when I see it. This little baby is to me perfection and like many little baby benz compacts before her will one day be a long lasting much sort after and expensive classic. But for now you are mine and I am yours and happy we live in each others hearts.

REVIEW : The government, it seems, can’t make up its mind regarding import of CBUs into this country, but Mercedes Benz have gone ahead and decided to import some selected models anyway. Amongst these, are the SLK-Class (coupe/convertible), the CLK-Class (cabrio), and the M-Class (off-roader) cars. The SLK230. Let’s do the numbers first. Rupees Four Million (or thereabouts). And a 4-pot 2295cc Supercharged (’’Kompressed’’ in Kraut-speak) DOHC engine that pumps out 197 horses, which, from a standing start, propel the car’s 1310 kilos to 100 km/hr in less than 8 seconds! Hmmm! :-) The press launch of the car was in Lonavala, and it rained heavily on the day, but that certainly did not deter loonies like me from wringing the SLK’s neck to the max. Top speed is in the region of 230 km/hr, which we did up and down the Pune Expressway. Yes, there is ABS, so those speeds are generally safe-ish... I was a bit unhappy with the 5-speed auto box though. Sure, it performs without a glitch, and upshifts and downshifts are clean, and instant, but I would rather have a 6-speed manual in a car like this.

REVIEW : This car has two doors, and two seats (no 2+2 like, say, the CLK-Class...), and the interiors are quite business-like. No elegant wood here. Aluminum trim and carbon-fibre accents is what the SLK gets, and these go with the car’s character quite well. Unlike other Mercs, this one also gets a proper handbrake. None of those crappy foot-operated parking brakes for the SLK, thank heavens for that :-)
